Rescue groups are made up of the most generous, kindhearted people you will ever meet. Sadly, they spend most of their days cleaning up the messes of careless dog and cat owners, and trying to prevent new messes by educating the public on the kind of care that dog and cat ownership realistically requires, and the paramount importance of spay/neuter.

Rescue groups come in all shapes and sizes. Some groups have an actual facility to house the dogs and cats, and some groups have a nexus of loyal foster parents who care for the dog or cat in their own home, typically taking on the expense of caring for those animals until they are placed in their forever homes. You also have groups that specialize. For instance, some groups only take small or large breeds, some will only rescue senior or disabled dogs and cats, and of course there are thousands that are devoted to a specific breed. But at the end of the day, all rescue groups have the same goal in mind, which is to find loving homes for each and every one, and to save as many lives as humanly possible.
